Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. ConnellGriffin, as the Delivery Partner for the City and Southwest Brownfield Works, is responsible for providing high-level commercial, construction, handover and contract finalisation management of the Brownfield Works Contracts. The Brownfield Works Contracts comprise:
- Sydenham Station & Junction (SSJ)
- Central Station Main (CSM)
- Southwest Stations & Corridor (SSC)

The Project
Sydney Metro is Australia’s biggest public transport project. This new standalone railway will deliver 31 metro stations and more than 66 kilometres of new metro rail, revolutionising the way Australia’s biggest city travels.
Metro means a new generation of world-class fast, safe and reliable trains easily connecting customers to where they want to go. When services start in the first half of 2019, customers won’t need timetables – they’ll just turn up and go with a train every four minutes in the peak.
When Sydney Metro is extended into the central business district (CBD) and beyond in 2024, metro rail will run from Sydney’s booming North West region under Sydney Harbour, through new underground stations in the CBD and beyond to the south west.
Sydney Metro comprises the following stages:
Stage 1: Sydney Metro Northwest
Formerly the 36 kilometre North West Rail Link, this $8.3 billion project opens in the first half of 2019 with a metro train every four minutes in the peak. It includes eight new metro stations, five upgraded stations and 4,000 commuter car spaces
Stage 2: Sydney Metro City and Southwest
A 30 kilometre extension of metro rail from the end of Sydney Metro Northwest at Chatswood under Sydney Harbour, through new CBD stations and south west to Bankstown. It is due to open in 2024 with seven new metro stations and 11 upgraded stations.
ConnellGriffin, as the Delivery Partner for the City and Southwest Brownfield Works, is responsible for providing high-level commercial, construction, handover and contract finalisation management of the Brownfield Works Contracts
As part of Sydney Metro Stage 2: City and Southwest, the Brownfield Works Contracts include:
- Sydenham Station & Junction (SSJ).
- Central Station Main (CSM).
- Southwest Stations & Corridor (SSC).
Sydenham Station & Junction (SSJ)
The Sydenham Station and Junction (“SSJ”) Works Package is an important package for Sydney Metro City & Southwest and its successful completion is necessary to enable the commencement of Sydney Metro City and Southwest operations to Sydenham Station in 2024. The SSJ Works Package comprises:
- Sydenham Station works including concourse, platforms, services building and fitout (excluding linewide contracts);
- Sydenham junction works, including civil works, trackwork, overhead traction power, signalling and train control systems for the remodelling of Sydenham Junction;
- Existing combined services route adjustments and relocations; and Other enabling works in the brownfield environment to support the Tunnel and Station Excavation (TSE) Works Package and Southwest Stations and Corridor (SSC) Works Package.
Central Station Main (CSM)
The Central Station Main Works generally includes:
- the Metro Station Works, comprising a new Metro Station below existing platforms 12 to 15, and associated modifications to existing infrastructure;
- the Central Station Works, comprising adjustments to existing infrastructure, to connect the Metro Station Works to the existing Central Station; and
- the Central Walk Works comprising new infrastructure, and adjustments to existing infrastructure, to connect the Metro Station Works with Chalmers Street via a new underground concourse.
Southwest Station and Corridor (SSC)
The Southwest Station and Corridor ("SSC") Works Package for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project comprises:
- Station works including concourse, platforms, services building and fitout (excluding linewide contracts) from Marrickville to Bankstown;
- Rail corridor works, including civil works, structures, trackwork, overhead traction power, signalling and train control systems;
- Existing combined services route adjustments and relocations; and
- Temporary works to enable continuous Sydney Trains operations until completion
- Other enabling works in the brownfield environment to support the follow on works packages.
